What It Is
Cacao is an ancient fruit that dates as far back as the Mayans (around 400 A.D.), when it was used as a drink mixed with cinnamon and pepper (chillies). Cacao beans are actually “seeds” that come from the cacao pod, growing on trees as high as 40 feet tall and sprouting small flowers pollinated by tiny flies (Forcipomyia), not bees. The main compound in cacao is Theobromine and it is the dominant stimulant (similar to caffeine).
Rich Nature cacao nibs are a blend of 3 types of cacao and is Raw and Vegan friendly, GF, Organic, Wheat Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free, and Corn Free.
Our cacao nibs are made from carefully cultivated, UNROASTED cacao beans from the Amazonian region of South America and is smooth, bold, and rich in flavors.
Our obsession with Chocolate
Cacao is not just an important part of mesoamerican history – they continue to be an important agricultural product to this day. Without cacao, there is no chocolate (and some might say without chocolate, there is no happiness).
The meaning of chocolate has changed over time, from its importance as currency and medicine to a symbol of romance. Chocolate is something we can be passionate about. There is history, culture, and luxury associated with chocolate. It has inspired movies, books, and even individuals to start companies simply due to their love of chocolate. It remains as one of the most important crops of all time.
As it turns out, there is nothing wrong with obsessing over chocolate. In fact, it’s even good for you.
Health Benefits of Cacao
Cacao is chocolate in its purest form – without adulteration, without additives, and without treatment of any kind. Although there is no sugar in cacao beans, there are all kinds of polyphenols, magnesium, and dietary fibers. Cacao nibs are smooth and bold in flavor, crunchy in texture, and fragrantly chocolate-y.
While it’s true that heavily processed, sugar loaded milk chocolate can contribute to health problems, raw, unprocessed cacao beans can have the absolute opposite effect on your body.
Did you know that cacao contains more phenolic and antioxidant compounds than green tea or red wine? The major phenolic compounds are the flavonoids: catechins, epicatechins, and proanthocyanidins.
Catechins – Studies suggest that catechins have been able to reduce oxidative stress and possibly prevent the growth of certain cancer cells. In one study of Chinese tea drinkers, the group that drank green tea regularly had a 50% less chance of getting stomach cancer than the group that did not drink green tea regularly. Cacao contains more phenolic content than green tea.
Epicatechins – some studies suggest that a diet rich in epicatechins may prevent certain cancers, such as skin cancer. Epicatechins can be most effective with exercise and may improve memory function and boost learning ability. They are also thought to reduce muscle fatigue.
Proanthocyanidins are flavon-3-ols present in apples, pine bark cinnamon, grape seed, green and black teas, and currant. However, cacao beans contain the highest concentration of proanthocyanidins among these. Proanthocyanidins also promote collagen and maintain elastin. Current research shows that Proanthocyanidins are more powerful than Vitamin E and Vitamin C for skin!
Cacao actually sends messages to our brain during consumption – it literally makes us happy to eat it. Cacao boosts endorphins and seratonin (feel good chemicals produced by our brain). Cacao mixed in with a little bit of sugar can also give an instant mood boosting sugar high – just watch out for that crash so don’t over do it.
